Due to chimneys’ exposure to the elements, they are usually the first part of a masonry building to show signs of deterioration.
Proper maintenance of the chimney is of utmost importance, not only for aesthetic purposes, but for safety reasons as well. A hairline crack (often invisible from the ground level) in chimney cap, brick or mortar, if not attended, can cause serious and rapid damages. Water penetration through failed cap will cause the top portion of the chimney to crumble. Dislodged bricks or clay liners can block the flue, trapping vapors inside the living areas and creating a carbon-monoxide poisoning hazard.
